When to change your mattress

How Often Should You Change Your Mattress?

We’ve assembled a small list of key factors to look out for when considering when to change your mattress.

It is a common belief that we spend at least one-third of our lives sleeping. That means, for the majority of humans at least 20 – 30 years are spent lying on a mattress. It means that our mattress plays an even greater role than many of us may understand. It is crucial to good back health, and a good night’s rest. How often then should we consider changing our mattress to ensure we get the best out of it?

In most sleep forums, the timeline for a new mattress varies between 6-10 years. The mattress industry and the Sleep Council strongly recommend that you replace a mattress every eight years because by this time it will have lost much of its original comfort and support. However, while this is the recommendation it is not set in stone.

Cloaked under much linen and many pillows our mattress often gets ignored. We may not notice the wear and tear or the sagging that may be obvious signs that it’s time for a replacement. You’ll know when it’s time to shop for a new mattress based on how you feel when you wake up. Here are a few general guidelines that may help you decide when it’s time for a new mattress. These may occur before the 6 -10-year mark or even after.

General Guidelines for how often you should change your mattress.

Wear and tear – A visible dip in the middle of your mattress or springs that start to poke through are definitely signs that it’s time to change your mattress.

Muscle stiffness in the morning – While waking up with aches and pains in the morning may be a sign of aging, it could also be the cause of a worn-out mattress that no longer provides comfort or support.

Worsening allergies or asthma– These could be due to dust mites and allergens that have built up over time, especially if you have never cleaned your mattress.

Putting more weight on your mattress – If you’ve gained weight or are now sharing your mattress, then can affect how well you sleep. When your mattress needs to support more weight than it did before, you may notice changes that make it less comfortable.

The fact is there is no one general factor or timeline for how often you should change your mattress. However, the guidelines outlined will give you a better indication of when replacement is fast approaching.
